The X-Plane Global Scenery ProjectPresent Release: GloS v6.60
News6th June 2003Transition to RAR archives For a little while, RAR archives have been made available, due to their considerably smaller size when used on scenery files. The initial deployment was considered very successful, and after careful testing on all X-Plane platforms, the download links to the old ZIP archives have been removed. This should result in less load on the repository servers, and that means better availability for everyone. If you absolutely need ZIP archives for some reason, they are still on the servers - but you'll have to find them yourself. 5th March 2003New Scenery Online The outage and upgrade mentioned yesterday has been completed. Enjoy the revised scenery. 4th March 2003Planned Outage Sometime within the next 24 hours, the Repository will be taken offline. After this point, the 6.14 scenery and the various patches will no longer be available. Within 24 hours of the outage beginning, the Repository should be back online, this time with re-rendered scenery for 6.60. The detail maps will also be located on a faster server than at present. Please note that there will not be any patches to upgrade to 6.60. While the patch upgrade to 6.14 was popular and successful, alternative technology is being implemented to ease the upgrade to 6.60. Further news on this subject will be posted here. 11th January 2003Happy New Year to all simmers. It's come to my attention that the three mirrors have been less robust than should be expected. Part of the cause was revealed today - Roy's mirror had been incorrectly linked in. Oops... It's fixed now, so enjoy the extra speed and reliability. As a side note, the focus of GloS has been shifting in recent months. We're disappointed by the rather minimal response to our offer to coordinate user-driven updates to the scenery. Instead, we're going to focus on making the automatically-generated scenery better, and distributing it more efficiently. We're still working quite closely with Austin in this direction. Much of the site is currently out of date - the download links work, but the FAQ and so on are pretty much useless. I'll try to get around to it once Emacs has finished rebuilding.
